I highly recommend splurging on these balls - May 17, 2010
Ever since I discovered these balls I have not been able to take my hands off of them. They are addicting to play with. Sometimes I will just sit there for hours manipulating them in new ways etc.
I highly recommend these balls for teens and adults to play with. I find that they are a fun way to pass the time when I have nothing better to do, and they also work as a distraction (something to keep your hands busy) when you're watching a show or something. It is fun and challenging as you have to get very creative to find ways to build certain things with them. I feel that they were a little on the expensive side; they were an impulse buy for me, but I am glad I splurged and got them.
Lastly, I would advise anyone with these balls to be very careful of where you keep them as they can cause damage if certain things are exposed to them (electronics, computers).
I love them! But... - May 14, 2010
I dearly love my Bucky Balls! They are completely addictive. My coworkers are buying them left and right after having seen mine and they all love them. They are the greatest things to happen to boring meetings.
However...
About 30 or so of my Bucky balls got lost after letting a friend play with them. Being unable to now make the original 6x6x6 cube that they came in, I absolutely had to order another set. My second set arrived. (I ordered the same exact item number, from the same exact store, right here on Amazon) I was very disappointed to find out that the second set are different than the first set. Magnetically, they are not a strong as the first set. The balls themselves each feel lighter in weight than the first set, and they have a totally different sound when they snap together. But, perhaps worst of all, they are slightly smaller than my first set.
Unfortunately, while attempting to prove to a coworker that I wasn't crazy, both sets got mixed together. Now, nothing comes out right. All the shapes are screwed up and wobbly because some of the balls are smaller.
I am now a very unhappy Bucky Ball owner!
Buckyballs-older toy - May 13, 2010
Priced kinda high; educational fun; excellent for hours of enjoyment. The more sets that are purchased the more you can do with this toy. Very hands on, and lots of fun for adults too.
Great toy! - May 09, 2010
This is a great toy overall. It comes as the picture shows, and you can do many things with it. A downside, though, is that the little magnets are very easy to lose.
Requires patience - May 07, 2010
Not a toy for people with short attention spans. Even simple structures require a lot of time and a steady hand. One ill-placed ball can ruin your work. The powerful magnetism can pull apart your structure when you try to fix it. A good toy, but its certainly not a replacement for Legos or other building toys. More of a novelty than anything.
magnet fun - Apr 29, 2010
They are too fun to have around at close hand. You will find yourself playing with them just for something to mess with.
Combined sets for super fun - Apr 26, 2010
I combined some of the Dr. Jordan's magnet cube to the buckyball and was able to make huge creations.
with the Dr. Jordan's Magnet Cube GOLD I added cool details and the Dr. Jordan's Magnet Cube BRIGHT SILVER made stripes etc on my designs.
Cannot Put It Down - Apr 26, 2010
Seriously, don't order this. You might not ever stop playing with it. I have to hide it from myself it is that much fun. There are a bunch of videos online that teach you how to make some cool things.
absolutely wrong concept - Apr 23, 2010
The specific geometries and properties of buckyballs, fullerenes, and nanotubes are not due to their magnetic properties.
Spectacular - Apr 21, 2010
I got a set of these from a local store and I find them irresistible. As soon as I come home I find myself messing around with them for many minutes. Very hard to put down. Recommend them for any and all procrastinators and people who like to fiddle with things.
A lot of fun! - Apr 18, 2010
As a self-proclaimed science nerd, the first time I saw a demo of these on Youtube I was intrigued. The price seemed kind of high, but considering there are 216 of these high powered little magnets I figure it was worth it. When I received them, my first impression was that the balls are a lot smaller than they seem in videos and pictures. However, this turns out to be much better for actually making things. You could play with these things for hours. Whether you are just connecting them in various ways or consciously trying to create a really interesting shape, they are guaranteed to keep you busy. Everyone in my family from kids to adults love them. I highly recommend this product.
Careful to not lose any of the little balls, as many of the more fancy shapes require exactly 216.
Portable science - Apr 16, 2010
I gave this to my son for his 10th birthday, he loves them! He has built the shapes from the instruction guide & also used these for other constructions. These are great toys for any kid who likes legislation; very versatile for building.
Completely addicting... - Apr 16, 2010
Saw these at Christmas, but put them back down because I thought $25.99 for a bunch of magnetic BBs was crazy. Boy was I wrong!
We ended up getting these for our 9 yo boy for his birthday, and now all of us "fight" over it to play with it. It's the perfect toy for a long car ride. Our 6 yo will sit in the middle of the living room floor (so we can make sure no pieces are lost) and quietly make things for up to an hour at a time (An hour! A 6 year old!).
The only downside is that they do not give you any extras (like w/the NeoCube). Within the first 3 days we lost 1 ball, but we were lucky in that the store we got them from gave us one as a replacement. Now I'm perusing Amazon looking to buy more (I think I'll pick up the double set - it seems like the best deal by far and both sets will definitely be used). It would be nice if they could come out with a 1,027 piece set like the NeoCube Omega.
I haven't personally played with the NeoCube or the other cheaper one (can't recall it's name), but from the reviews I've read it sounds like the Buckyballs are the best. They're the biggest (diameter-wise), the shiniest (chromed, not matte), and the chrome doesn't flake off (or at least it hasn't yet). Yes, they are more expensive, but I feel they are definitely worth it. A great toy that really captures the attention of the user.
Addictingly fun... but, fantastically poorly made. - Apr 15, 2010
I bought these buckyballs because it seemed really interesting. And they are! Really fun and addicting to play with. Only bad thing is that they're really poorly made. I've had them for less than a month now and they're already chipping and cracking. They're not smooth anymore and pieces of the outer layer of these balls are coming off. I'm pretty disappointed about that, especially since they cost $30+...
awesome to play with - Apr 08, 2010
This thing is a great coffee table toy.. while I figured out most of the cool formations you can make within a couple of days, it's a lot of fun when I have people over and they try to figure it out for themselves.
Only thing is that you end up losing a couple of balls in the process usually. Oh well.
Great toy for most - Mar 22, 2010
Before I expound upon the virtues of this absolutely 100% awesome product let me just say one thing: They really mean it when they put in the age limit. If a pet/small child swallows two (or adult, if that's the sort of adult it is :] ) they can cause serious harm to your insides. They can also be easily lost, but if it's on a wood floor, try the nails! I've found that's where they go often.
But on a lighter note, this is probably THE best toy I've ever owned! Not only is it a good relaxant, it is educational and can be organizational if you use them to, say, separate letters or index cards (see this link: <[...]> )
So simple but so fun! - Mar 15, 2010
I bought this product for my fiance as a Valentine's Gift. I know that's weird but he is so into this kind of stuff!
Bucky Balls are such a simple concept but can provide hours of fun. He messed around with it constantly the first day he got it and both of us will pick it up off the coffee table and play with it while watching TV. It's kinda addictive!
Be warned however: The balls are tiny and if you drop one it can be difficult to find them again.
Buckyballs are great! - Mar 11, 2010
This toy seems simple but turns out to provide hours of entertainment. The creators did well with the size and count of the balls, allowing for many shapes that are elaborate and large enough to work with. All of the building block shapes help reinforce geometry and need to work with the magnetic poles help kids understand how the poles align. The only reason that I rate the durability at 3 stars is because the loss of 1 ball can mess up many shapes and if the buckyballs hit the floor, they are likely to pick up metallic particles that are hard to get back off.
So addictive - Mar 06, 2010
I finally got around to purchasing these after seeing the video for them several months ago. I love them! They have a very soothing effect when you're just idly playing with them. I just have to remember to keep them away from my laptop because they're SO strong.
2nd Purchase - Mar 02, 2010
I have now purchased this item twice. My 16 year old never puts it down. It is fun for her because she can be creative with it and because it is magnets, she doesn't have to worry about losing any of the little pieces.
Great toy - Feb 22, 2010
I got this for my husband so he wouldn't keep playing with the remote all the time. He wasn't sure about it at first, but then really got into playing with it and trying to make neat shapes. It was also a hit at my son's birthday party - everyone wanted to play with it.
Fun - Feb 15, 2010
I bought this for my 11 year old grandson for Christmas and he never put it down once he opened it. It was fascinating to see all the things he could do with it. He was here with me for 3 days and played with it nonstop the whole time except when he was eating or sleeping but it did go to bed with him so I'm not sure about the sleeping.
Great fun - Feb 10, 2010
This toy is worth the cost - I purchased it for my granddaughter's ninth birthday, yet I don't know how much time she actually gets to play with it. This toy has been "kidnapped" by everyone else in the family. It is fascinating and fun - and I will probably have to purchase one for her older brother.
So Cool - Feb 10, 2010
I bought this product for my boyfriend, a busy CEO. This toy is like a stress ball, but much better. The earth magnets are amazing to watch (roll a ball over a granite countertop). The designs you can make are fun and challenging. I actually bought two sets so we can make multiple designs or one large creation. Cubes, rolls, jewelry, stars, etc. The possibilities are endless. Great value for a very cool product!
so much fun! - Feb 08, 2010
These magnetic balls were a hit this Christmas. A great gift item and fun to have on your desk for stress relief.
