    Tag Reading System
      Ages: 4 to 6 years

      Requires:
    • 2 "AAA" batteries (included)
    What We Think

    Fun factor:
    Durability:
    Educational factor:
    Novelty factor:

The Good: The interactive LeapFrog Tag Reading System engages children for hours of reading fun.

The Challenging: We wish there was a protective covering for the optical reader tip to store when not in use.

In a Nutshell: A creative, award-winning learning tool that can store audio for up to 10 interactive books.

With just a touch, the Tag Reader will read, sing, and ask questions to your child.

Kids can select from a growing library of interactive books and store them on the reader.

    Easy for Children to Use
The durable Tag Reader is cleverly shaped like a pen, with the optical reader at the tip. It's easy for children to operate independently and the pen fits well into small fingers. The lightweight Reader has a built-in speaker in the front for clear sound with volume control buttons located below the speaker. The adjustable volume ranges from very soft to loud.

Your child can also use the Reader with headphones (not included). An adult can help pry open the flaps that hide the headphone plug and USB port. There's also a handy audio book feature -- perfect for traveling -- that plays aloud an entire story. The battery is securely placed behind a screw-locked compartment for safety.

Advice to parents: the optical reader is exposed at the tip of the Reader so be sure to keep liquids away from it.

    Amazing Response with Every Touch
Your child will instantly gravitate to the entertaining, interactive way the Tag Reading System opens up the world of books. She can touch virtually anywhere on the special Tag Activity Storybook and the Reader will respond with music, sound effects, amusing phrases, and other fun activities related to the book. There are special symbols placed throughout the pages that cause the Reader to read the entire page, play a game, prompt children to answer "yes" or "no" questions, repeat a phrase, or simply stop the Reader from speaking.

When children want to read on their own but need just a little help, simply pointing to a word on the page will let them hear just that word. This feature is perfect for children that are just developing their reading skills but get frustrated when faced with a challenging word. The Reading System will help them gain confidence and enjoy reading. Each TAG Storybook features games and activities that will help develop age-appropriate skills such as building vocabulary, reading comprehension, and other core reading skills.

    Store up to 10 Books
The sample full-size book comes conveniently pre-loaded onto the Tag Reader. Additionally, 10 books can be loaded onto the Reader giving children the opportunity to switch back and forth between different books with ease. The Tag Reading system comes with a LeapFrog Connect CD and the Reader can easily connect to a computer with the USB cable (included).

There are currently over 30 books in the Tag Reading System library and it will continue to grow as LeapFrog constantly adds new books. Books range from classic children's books to contemporary, cartoon-based adventures, so there's something for every child. They also range in varying reading and skill levels allowing parents to tailor the books to their child's individual needs.

    What's in the Box
One Tag Reader, one full-size Tag Activity Storybook, USB Cable, LeapFrog Connect CD, 2 "AAA" batteries.

     Really bad idea - Jul 12, 2010

I purchased this toy for my granddaughter at christmas. I beleived the toy would encourage her to read since she loves books. All this toy has done is discourage her love of reading. She refuses to take the toy out of her backpack. She has told me that the toy never works right and does not read the books. I had her bring the toy to me last week. I tried to use the systtem and could not get it to work. I have contacted Leapfrog regarding the pen. I was told to clean the lens. I did as instructed but the pen does not work. Numerous people are complaining about the same thing. I have asked Leapfrog for a refund of my money and I am waiting for their reply.

Despite abuse - Tag Pen still working! - May 04, 2010

I got this for my daughter for Christmas and had grandparents get a bunch of books to go with it. She absolutely loves it. We lost the pen at one point and when it was found I handed it to her, not realizing she was about to explode with the stomach flu, and she barfed all over it. It still worked fine. Last week she dropped it in the toilet. I dried it out in the sun and it still works. Crazy! At this point, if it broke, I would replace it because she completely loves it. I do have a new Mac which isn't partitioned, just using as it is out of box and it works fine with downloading the books. You can put books on the pen prior to purchase so if you know you will likely be getting a book, put it on so you don't have to later. Also the pen tells you the batteries are running out long before they really run out.

     not what i expected - May 04, 2010

i bought this beacause my son loves anything electronic and is starting to read. but i would not have bought it if i had known that the books had little games in them. what a waste of my time and money! who ever decided to add games was an idiot! because there are games my son wanted nothing to do with the reading part. i sure thought it was called tag reading system, not tag game system. if i wanted games i would have bought something else. i am sending it back

One of the best investments we have made all year - May 03, 2010

One of the best investments we have made all year, LeapFrog's Tag Reading System is an Anya Favorite.

A little on the pricey side, but well worth it. Your little one will have a blast touching the pages with his/her Tag and hearing the story played through the pen. There are also a ton of other tid-bits buried in these books: games, reading assistants, the actual character voices.

LeapFrog Tag Reading System (Pink) (32 MB)We decided to actually purchase the Tag instead of the LeapFrog Tag Junior Book Pal because of the "test run" at Wal-Mart. Anya was much more interested in the pen than the little ball of the Tag Junior. The Tag is recommended for ages 4 - 8, whereas the Tag Junior is for 24 months to 4 years. I know a lot of parents want to age their child, buying advanced toys for little toddlers that aren't ready for them, and I usually try not to do this (usually a waste of money, because they lose interest quickly on these toys) but for this one I made an exception. She can't use all the functions cognizantly, but she enjoys holding the pen and clicking on words and pictures. I believe she will grow into the functions of the pen.

Not to mention this baby worked very easily with my MacBook - added bonus!

This company has really gone down hill! - Apr 04, 2010

I had always been very pleased with Leap Frog products until the last year. I purchased a Tag Reader for my oldest daughter and a Tag Junior for my youngest daughter. The Tag Junior works fine, but the Tag Reader is a complete piece of junk. It will not accept any books except for The Cat in the Hat one that came with the device. I've tried everything. I even thought it might be a problem with the books so I loaded one of the Tag Junior books that work fine and that didn't work either. I tried taking The Cat in the Hat off and then it does not recognize any of the other stories. It only took me a few minutes to set up the Tag Junior and the regular Tag Reader is still not working. I'm sending it back to Leap Frog with a letter. They can keep their junk. This is the second expensive item in the past year we have received from them that does not work properly. Another item we had problems with is the Click Start Computer--it never worked properly. We also had a Leapster that quit after only a few months.

My kids already love to read books so I'm not sure how much educational value this toy has at all. It seems to take the imagination out of reading. My youngest daughter will look at the pictures and make up the story with a regular book, but with this toy the imagination is gone because it makes the noises and reads the story for you. This combined with it not working make me a very unsatisfied Leap Frog customer. I have a useless Click Start, a useless Leapster, and now a useless Tag Reader. My family is done with Leap Frog until they take care of the quality control issues.

Stopped reading the words - Junk!!! - Mar 26, 2010

Worked great until it stopped reading the words. Now the only thing it does is play the whole book you've downloaded. Can't use it to read individual words any more which is what my son enjoyed most. I've heard this is a common issue.

     Great Toy! - Mar 14, 2010

My 2.5 & 4 year old got these for Christmas. They started wanting to read more and more and the book really helps. The two year old took a little time to get it, but he has caught on. Many of the books have the nice game features at the end that add to reading comprehension, but don't involve having to read the story. They make the same books entertaining over and over again. I will say my son's first pen stopped working unexpectedly - though I'm not sure the reason (i found it on the floor of the car after a week or two...not sure how it got there or what happened in the interim...) But I replaced it right away. My 4-year old will sit quietly in her room with it at bedtime, a nice way for her to put herself to bed.

    Great fun educational toy.

     magic pen - Feb 23, 2010

My grandchildren love this product--they are 5 and 7. The 5 year old carries the pen around with him and listens to the stories that way!

Leap Frog Tag- Poor Quality and Inadequate Customer Service - Feb 22, 2010

This is a great concept but stopped working after one use. The "pen" won't turn on even after changing the batteries. According to the "warranty info" I can't just return it to the store of purchase. I have to go through Leap Frog's customer service dept. Of course they are under staffed- they are "experiencing unusually high call volumes" (I bet that recording runs 24/7) and my hold time "may exceed 20 minutes" before getting to speak to someone (I've been here for 15 mins so far). This is criminal in my opinion. I shouldn't have to go through hoops and spend tons of time on the phone to get my [...] toy to work. I have 4 kids. No time for this. No more Leap frog toys for us!

     Good learning toy - Feb 18, 2010

I bought this for my son who will be 3 in a few months. I know that the product says 4 and up but he already knows all of his colors, shapes, letters and numbers so I felt that he would be able to use the Tag longer than the Tag junior. After comparing them I really felt that the more advanced parts of the Tag junior can be down with the Tag. The biggest difference is the device that you use on the books. I think that the kids will have to be careful with the pen tip because it is small it may break.... mine hasn't yet and my son can be a little rough with things. :-) He understands to point to the different pictures to make them talk and to point to the purple circle that will read the whole page. We played with the demo that Leapfrog has on their website and he really loved repeating all the words that the computer said so I knew that he would like it. They have a few videos of the Tag Junior there as well so you can see a comparison.

No reading pen (Tag Reader) included! - Feb 05, 2010

Quite misleading: the picture on the box shows a Tag Reader (Pen reader) so I was expecting one but when I opened the box : it just contained the books!

At the least, warn the customer that the Tag Reader is SOLD SEPARATELY!

Great educational and entertaining toy! - Feb 01, 2010

My daughter received the tag with a few books for her 4th birthday. It is a source of entertainment and learning everyday. She loves to "read" a few books everyday, which gives me some quiet time!

     Fantastic toy & learning tool for ages 3 & 6 - Jan 22, 2010

I have two boys, ages 3 1/2 and just turned 6, and they got two Tag systems for Christmas. We also got them some additional books, and they received more books from relatives. Currently they have the Cat in the Hat that came with it, Star Wars, T-Rex's Mighty Roar, Bakugan, Up, and Cars' Tractor Tipping.

We have the old leap pad - it was handed down to us - but it's not as easy to use, it requires a child to sit at a table to use it, and you have to have the cartridge in just right for it to work. This is so much better and more portable. We gave the boys sets of headphones for the car, and they take it with them everywhere. Since Christmas I doubt a day has gone by where they are not "reading" one of the books. My 3 year old needed no instruction, just figured it out. He loves T-Rex's Mighty Roar in particular, and though I got Bakugan for his older brother, he "reads" it too. He's memorized nearly all of the books.

It only takes 2 AA batteries, works very well. We keep the whole system plus the two pens in a small backpack to keep it neat. I used our labeler to put their names on the pens - I do wish they came in different colors besides green and pink; it would have been nice to give one in blue or red to one kid and green or yellow to the other, but they know their names so it works out.

We don't allow our kids to play video games or go on the computer so this was a big deal for us - we didn't want a toy where they are getting a lot of screen time or zoning out. This is truly an educational toy that they love and learn from.

I hope LeapFrog continues to put new titles out - especially continuations of existing titles - like a second Star Wars, Cars movie, and also other non-media associated titles. I was also disappointed that Amazon isn't carrying Green Eggs & Ham except through Target! But we'll get it elsewhere

It is a great bargain - do check out the deals at LeapFrog directly, they are sometimes better than here.

     Greatest Present Ever!! - Jan 22, 2010

This is by far the greatest thing I have ever received for my son. I love it! It has opened his eyes and mind to learning. He has letter recognition down, but actually putting the letters together and making words was our next step. This was a surprise present, and one I now recommend and buy for others! I was a little hesistant with the tip, but it seams to hold up to my son's roughness. The only problem we have run across is battereis. My son is on this thing so much, he is eating batteries. Might do recharageables just to keep up! And if you are a little too rough with the tip, it will dent the pages. It's something else they learn- how to be gentle with their toys! Love it, and I think it's something everyone should incorporate into their childs learning!

     Great Product - Jan 18, 2010

I was a little skeptical of this when my husband bought it for our 5 year old for Christmas 2009. But wow...I'm converted. Our son is in kindergarten and learning to read, and this is really motivating him. I often find him and his 3-year old brother in their room reading books together (we have Ben 10, Spongebob, Scooby Doo and Dr Seuss). It really is great. He often has it on the mode where he is "reading" the book (repeating after the voice). I have had other products, and the kids seem to loose interest pretty fast or can't hear it or something. This, however, so far has been a great buy. I love that they are learning the joy of reading. I highly recommend it.

     Dead on Arrival - Jan 17, 2010

We bought this for Christmas for my four year old little girl. I would love to tell you how it works and what the educational value of it is but we cant. It doesnt work. I have tried everything. My husband, an IT professional, spent hours online and checking out problems that other people have had and nothing. I would have returned it to Amazon but since it was a gift from Santa, the box is long gone. She received several of the books that are thankfully unopened which I will try to return. I was really looking forward to using this with her since she loves books so much. I guess we will stick to learning to read the old fashioned way.

     Love the Tag - Jan 17, 2010

I got the Tag reading system for my 3 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. I was torn between buying her the Tag Jr and the Tag. She ended up LOVING the tag system and received 5 Tag books for Christmas as well. She figured out how to use it very quickly and read for over an hour when she first received it. The game (The Stars on the pages) are a little more advanced for her and I have to help her sometimes with those, which is nice since she has something to "grown into".

This product is VERY educational and I think my daughter will continue to use it for years to come. It is also great for long car rides, which we take on a regular basis. It is also very durable - The "pen" has been dropped many times in the car and there are no signs of wear or tear. I highly recommend the plastic case to keep the books and Tag in as well. It comes in very handy and my daughter thinks she is really cool carrying it around :).

    Highly Recommend.

Great toy even for a TWO YEAR OLD! - Jan 16, 2010

I originally bought the tag junior for my daughters birthday in October. By Christmas she has already outgrown it. I was a little leery of buying the Tab Reading System for her for Christmas. Once I realized it read all the tag junior books also, I figured it was worth the try. WIthin minutes, she figured out how to use the pen, just like the tag junior. These books are more interactive than the tag junior's books and actually grow with your child. We ended up buying her the case to go with the pen and books. I am a college student and having a "backpack" for your daughter to bring her "homework" with so she can imitate you and sit next to you at school/ study groups and read is priceless. She has grown in her independence, and this toy will grow with her.

     Amazing, FUN, Educational - Jan 16, 2010

Both of my kids (5 and 3) LOVE this toy! I love knowing that they are learning, as they play! They both love playing with it, however, it seems like my 3 year old loves it even more. Great value for the price! Would recommend to everyone. Don't buy the Tag Super Speller and Tag Funny Phrases, they are far from durable. They are made of cardboard, and break easily. STICK WITH THE BOOKS for the tag system!

Does not work with Windows 7/Vista/USB - Jan 13, 2010

The TAG can not connect with Windows 7 or Vista. It may be an USB issue. But you need this to download the audio into the TAG pen before you can interact with the books. Great concept poor execution. And on top of that, customer service gets an F-.

Go to the [...] parents community forums and search for "error 17" or "usb" to see all the pains people are going through, including me.

     Great toy - Jan 11, 2010

This is an awesome toy for children who are interested in reading with someone or on their own. Each page allows you to touch each word allowing for word recognition or you may touch the icon and it will read the entire page. Also each page has a game that may be played as well. My 3 year old loves to sit and read and play on her own as well as sit with us and show us all the fun stuff. You will however need a computer to set up the pen program.

Great learning toy, and great Mac support - Jan 10, 2010

A great progressive learning tool for kids. My 4 year old has used this for hours since getting it at Christmas.

I've installed it on two different Macs, and one Windows box, and I've found the Mac software to be great. In my opinion, quicker and better looking than the windows version. Very nice. If you're a Mac user, don't hesitate.

     Coolest thing ever! - Jan 10, 2010

Purchased this for my 3 year old for Christmas. It is awesome. Such amazing technology. I highly recommend it. It is recommended for 4yrs. and up, but he seems to be able to use it just fine - I think the real difference is the reading and comprehension level of the books that are used with it. Tag Jr. books may be a little more down his alley right now, but I didn't want him to grow out of it too quickly and I like to challenge him a little.
You will not be disappointed with this product. It has exceeded my expectations.

LeapFrog Reading System is excellent! - Jan 09, 2010

My husband and I bought the LeapFrog Tag Reading System for our granddaughter and she loves it! She is 4 and learning to read. The only problem is that her parents often find her reading in bed past her bedtime!

My 4 year old loves this - Jan 05, 2010

I bought this for my 5 year old daughter for Christmas 2009 and she can't get enough of it. She can literally spend hours sitting in her room listening to every single sound on every single page. And she enjoys playing the games over and over again. She also likes to touch each word individually and hear how they are pronounced, so I think this is a great learning tool.

We used to have the old leap frog system with the crappy paper spiral books. These are so much better. You get actual hardback books. So even if you don't use the leapfrog pen, you still have a nice book to put on your shelf. And there are some good books in the series, including two Dr. Seuss classics.

I don't really have any complaints about this system. The pen might be easy to lose if you don't store it somewhere when the kids are done with it. I also hope that they release more "classic" books instead of just activity books.
