    What We Think

    Fun factor:
    Durability:
    Ease of assembly:
    Educational factor:

The Good: 2-in-1 toy that helps your infant develop walking and balancing skills.

The Challenging: Wheels are not designed for extensive outdoor use.

In a Nutshell: A versatile walker/ride-on toy complete with fun, sensorial gadgets.

Push It, Ride It, Turn It, Spin It
The Step Start Walk 'n Ride is designed to help your child with many activities, including standing, walking, and riding. The Walk 'n Ride also gives your child plenty of sit-down play, with sight-touch-sound features such as the gear shifter, lifting hood, spinning drum, and clicking dial. The walker/rider is also outfitted with bright, fun colors and friendly, smiling characters that are sure to please your infant or toddler while using.

For parents, one of the best functions on this toy is its locking mechanism that changes the toy's mode from a walker to a ride-on toy. The lock cannot be undone by the child, and there is a distinct click that sounds when the lock is set in place.

While your child is using the walker/rider, be sure to keep them away from sloped driveways and hills. Though the wheels are made out of very thick plastic, they are designed for the slower movements of a young child on a level, steady surface.

A Great Walker and Rider for Beginners
This walker/rider is excellent for its versatility of options for your waddler's different stages of development. And while your child is learning important stability skills, he or she can also play with and look at the fun sensorial gadgets that are attached from top to bottom in bright, fluorescent colors. The fact that the Step Start Walk 'n Ride is two toys in one makes it an economical choice and prolongs the amount of time your child will still be excited to use it and benefit from its activities.

    What's in the Box
Body, four wheels, front handle, rear handle, handle retainer, domed lid, dial, roller, spinner (two pieces), antenna, gear shift, four plain #6 screws, and one #6 screw with attached washer.

     Great Beginner Walker/Rider - Jul 23, 2010

My daughter has loved this toy from when she was 5-6 months old. She would play with the knobs and everything on the toy when she couldn't ride/walk with it. Now she uses it to practice walking all around the house. She likes to sit on it but her feet don't reach the floor just yet for her to ride. I am sure she will take off on it once she can.

     Cute walker - Jul 07, 2010

This walker is very cute, easy to assemble, my child loves it, but it is much safer as a rider vs. a walker. It is very easy to convert to walker/sitter position but it easily seems to topple forward if a child is just learning to walk

     Don't need it... - Jul 06, 2010

This was given to our son as a Christmas gift when he was 9 months old. He played with the little toys on the front a few times, but every time I tried to get him to walk with it he would get upset... the plastic wheels are just way too smooth and it moves too quickly. It would maybe be okay once they're walking a little but could use something to stabilize them, but at that point you really just don't need it anymore. It was completely useless for us, and I don't see how it would help a child learn to walk. If you're dead set on getting a walker, I'd go for a more expensive wooden one that will do it's job. But either way, you're child will learn to walk before you know it without the help of anything... so save the money for child-proofing everything once they get going!

Ok for what it is. - Jul 03, 2010

I wanted something simple and cheap for my very eager 11 month old son to practice walking with, and that's pretty much all this is.

We only have carpet and it rolls a little fast, but is manageable. I wouldn't recommend it for hard floors, though.
I was a little disappointed when we pulled it out of the box and started putting it together - it's pretty gaudy and not terribly sturdy. It also seems a little awkward to walk behind - the wheels are almost at the same width that my son steps at, so he bumps them sometimes with his feet.
I don't find the transition from walker to rider too difficult, although I did pinch my finger the first time I snapped it up to a walker, so be sure to watch where your (and baby's) hands are.

My son likes both modes, but I can't see him getting a whole lot of use out of it, simply because he'll soon outgrow it - he's not a particularly big baby, but he already seems too big for the rider.

All of that said, he giggles madly when he uses it and seems to really enjoy it. It's not an especially brilliant, solid walker, but it does the job for us.

     Mr. Independent! - Jun 21, 2010

My 11-month-old grandson was a little skeptical when we first introduced him to this toy, he cried and wouldn't hold on. But after a few tries he is moving through the house like GANGBUSTERS!!!!
He likes playing with the interactive features on the front when he's not up walking around. It's the perfect height and the handle fits his little hands. It was very easy to assemble, took less than 5-minutes.
I was afraid it wouldn't be sturdy enough and the wheels would roll out from under him when he pushed but it's very stationary and supports him well. Now he's Mr. Independent and it has really helped him gain the confidence he needs to walk on his own.

My 9 Month Old Loves It! - Jun 14, 2010

My 9 month old can't stand yet or sit and move the car around (may be due to the fact that we have carpet), but she loves to just sit on the car and grab at the gadgets. She always manages to pull the lid off the compartment and chew on that. I know it will be even better when she can stand with it and actually move with it, but for right now, she's just learning to scoot so that might be awhile. But she loves the toys on it and it's very colorful. The wheels don't turn very well though (even on hard floor). Maybe that's just the one we got. I would recommend it, although I did see it a little cheaper in another store, of course after I already bought it through here.

     Baby loved it! - Jun 09, 2010

I bought this as a christmas gift for a friend's baby. The set up was relatively easy no screw drivers necessary - requires minimal snapping into place type set up. I bought this gift only because he was a little shy of being a year old and was gearing up to take his first step. I thought it would be a great toy/learning tool since a lot of times he was scared of standing alone and this toy can help him practice his steps while playing.

The minute the set up was complete - he pushed the toy around back and forth between the kitchen and living room. Occasionally being tired he would sit and play with the different toys attached on the toys in front of the toy.

A great affordable gift items for babies who are gearing up to taking their first step!

Do Not Buy This - May 27, 2010

I really didn't like this toy. It is nonfunctioning as both a walking toy and a riding one. As a walker, there isn't enough room for a child's feet when they are walking with it in front of them. As a rider and walker, it doesn't roll very well. I just didn't like this at all. It also doesn't have as many activities on it as many other walking and riding toys. I would not recommend anyone buy this.

     It's Okay, not the best - May 26, 2010

My daughter received this as a christmas gift, and she uses it from time to time, Mostly she will push it around. The car doesn't lock into place when it's in the down position and I'm always afraid if it is in the up position that it will end up falling on her. Over all she is amused with it, but it's not the most durable!

Good toy, but not for beginning walkers - May 17, 2010

My daughter is 9 months and learning how to balance herself while standing. We bought this as a toy to support her while she learns how to take her first steps. Unfortunately, the wheels move very quickly, even on our carpet, and the design has the back wheels right where her unsure feet would be. We're going to have to place this is storage until she is a better walker before we can use it, which defeats the purpose of the "walker" portion.

It is very bright and beautiful and captured her attention right away. I'm sure she'll love the riding portion once she's older. It's just not a practical walker.

Boring and too light - May 15, 2010

This toy doesn't really do much. Didn't hold my daughter's attention for more than a second at any time. Plus, it's just too light and wheels move too fast. Even when she was walking unsupported, it would fly ahead of her and cause her to fall over, or she would tip it over. Buy a more expensive one with more bells and whistles and a bit more weight to it because this thing isn't worth the $20.

     love love love - Apr 29, 2010

i got this for my son at his first birthday. he loves it sooooo much. all he wants to do is go in all the rooms and walk around. we go for walks and he loves to be out and walking...

Not for learners..wheels move to fast. - Apr 19, 2010

This was a decent toy but it is for babies in the early stages of walking. My daughter didn't much like it. The wheels move quickly and she can't keep up with it.. yet.

Wobbly and not baby friendly - Mar 13, 2010

My daughter is 9 months old and is just learning how to walk. She received this as a gift for Christmas last year and was unable to use it at first despite being able to pull herself up to standing. The wheels on this are simply far too slippery. As soon as my daughter would begin to pull herself up on this it would roll away and bring her back to her knees. The gear shift, front compartment and rear rattle barrel were captivating to her though. After really getting the walking motion down on her Fisher-Price Brilliant Basics Stroll-Along Walker I let her have another go at this. Pulling herself up is easier now but it'll still roll away from her from time to time. The wheels definitly need improvement for this to be an effective walker.

Another concern I have with this is that when my daughter does manage to get herself standing and walking on it, the handle that she's holding onto seems to be really unstable. It will wobble from side to side as she walks and that's not so helpful when she as a 9 month old is already a bit wobbly on her feet. The handle could stand to be made from some firmer plastics that wouldn't allow so much movement.

The space for my daughter's feet (which is small, but not as small as other reviewers have made it out to be) could stand to be bigger. My daughter is on the taller side of the 9 month old height scale but the depth of this part doesn't seem to affect her stride.

Overall, if you have a little girl who's ready to start walking I reccomend purchasing the Fisher-Price Brilliant Basics Stroll-Along Walker. It's very stable, doesn't move an inch when my daughter pulls herself up on it and has plenty of room for those babies that may have larger strides.

Too easy to pull over - Feb 16, 2010

This toy is ok for one to ride on, but didn't really work too well for walking with. The problem is it fell over when my son put too much weight while trying to walk, he tried to pull up using it a few times and it fell on him. As a result it was never really used for walking which was what I bought it for.

     Gets them walking - Feb 10, 2010

Provided just enough support to aid my child in taking her first steps. A little slick on hardwood floors for a child who still doesn't have enough control on their feet, but in little time they learn to get their feet moving to keep up with the walker. Takes a little getting used too, that's all, but I would certainly recommend it.

     Great to Grow - Feb 05, 2010

My godson loved this toy. He is just about to walk and took to it with enthusiasm. His older brother showed him what was possible and he was smiling. I look forward to see him maturing with the uses of the toy. Good job!

     Walk and Ride - Jan 17, 2010

This toy was for a friend's son. It was great to see the look on his face when the boy sat on and rode it around the room.

    GREAT!

Great Toy For New Walkers! - Jan 15, 2010

Our daughter was a very careful walker. This toy gave her confidence to walk around while still have a safety hold. It turns easily and its fast and easy to change it from a walker to a ride on toy. Ours is a little different color than this. It is pink & blue. We bought a couple of attractive wooden walkers but our daughter always preferred this one. I think it is because it was so easy for her to turn and move it and she really enjoyed all the extras like the spinning toy, and turn key.

     Niece Loved IT - Jan 07, 2010

Uses to be mobile everywhere she roams.. that may be the downside... it makes them very mobile!!!!

     Not quite what I expected..... - Jan 06, 2010

We got this toy on sale from Wal-Mart for $[...] and I'm glad we didn't pay more. This was a christmas gift for my 15 month old daughter and I was a little worried cause we got her another "ride on" toy for $50. The Walk n' Ride isn't as substantial as I expected (don't know what I was expecting for $[...]). My daughter can't ride it cause it's too low to the ground, and the wheels aren't quality made so when she puts her weight on it, it's hard for her to push (she's thin, in the 30% for weight). She can push it around in the standing position and does play with the on board toys but they don't hold her interest for too long. For $[...] I can't knock it, but it's not what I'd call a great toy.

She MUCH prefers her other ride on toy which I can't find online, otherwise I'd recommend it.

     Twins love it! - Jan 04, 2010

Arrived earlier than expected. Came in an Amazon box then the Playschool box inside...perfect condition. Minimal assembly required, good instructions. My boys love this toy. They haven't been walking with it too much yet, they are just moving from one object to another. They will stand next to it and play with all of the gadgets for quite some time for 10 month old babies. One of the boys walked from one end of our living room to the other, with my help to slow the toy down, for almost 45 minutes last night...his face was very intent, enjoying being able to walk around with his toy. In my opinion this is a good buy for the price. I really like that once they are walking the walker converts to a sit and push car type toy.

     Not well designed - Jan 04, 2010

There isn't much room on the seat for the baby to hold onto the handle. It doesn't seem designed naturally to fit a baby's body. Although it is nice to have toys to play with on the front and the back of the unit, it is hard for the baby to reach the toys behind him when sitting down. My baby isn't walking yet, so we'll see if we like this product better as he uses it in a different manner.

Great Toy for my 10 month old girl! - Jan 01, 2010

My daughter is too small to sit on it on her own, but she loves being on it with our help!

     Highly Recommended - Dec 31, 2009

This is a fantastic toy. It helps with the transition phase of crawling and walking. Very easy to put together it took about 10 minutes if that.
My grandson is enjoying the part of sitting on it and pushing it backwards. He will stand up with it, but hasn't taking any steps with it yet.
